Helping our students get work experience that relates to their area of study is a priority for Anne Arundel Community College. That’s where the Internship Office comes in; think of our role as that of a matchmaker. Not only do we match our students with the right employers. We also coordinate all internship opportunities that exist for AACC students—ensuring the process is a seamless one for them and the faculty, staff, businesses and community organizations that work with us.

HOSTING AN AACC INTERN REQUIRES:
An employer mentor - An internship requires that a student be mentored by a content expert in the student’s area of study. If you don’t have the expertise at your organization, you can post the position as a job on AACC’s College Central job bank.
A description of the internship position - Employers are required to complete the requested information in the Internship Proposal link.
An understanding of legal issues and best practices:
- The National Association of Colleges and Employers’ Criteria for Defining an Experience as an Internship:
- The experience must be an extension of the classroom: a learning experience that provides for applying the knowledge gained in the classroom. It must not be simply to advance the operations of the employer or be the work that a regular employee would routinely perform.
- The skills or knowledge learned must be transferable to other employment settings.
- The experience has a defined beginning and end, and a job description with desired qualifications.
- There are clearly defined learning objectives/goals related to the professional goals of the student’s academic coursework.
- There is supervision by a professional with expertise and educational and/or professional background in the field of the experience.
- There is routine feedback by the experienced supervisor.
- There are resources, equipment, and facilities provided by the host employer that support learning objectives/goals.
- Follow US Department of Labor’s Fair Labor Standards Act guidelines when deciding intern compensation.
- Employers must provide Worker’s Compensation.

Student Recruitment Process
Once your mentor and position description are in place, then you can get started on the recruitment process:
- Post the position: Register on the Internship Navigator, AACC’s searchable database. After your registration has been approved, you can then upload the position description. Please allow one to three business days for your posting to be reviewed and approved. Once the posting is approved, you will be able to see student résumés and students will be able to see your posting and apply for the position.
- Explore recruitment strategies: Contact the Internship Office to explore options for promoting your internships with the academic departments and at recruitment events.
