AACC’s flavor profile goes international in July when seven representatives from City of Glasgow College will leave behind Scotland’s haggis and stovies and embrace the blue crab, rockfish and flounder that grace the Chesapeake Bay.

A team of two faculty members and five students from the Scottish institute will visit July 9 through 15. While here they will explore Annapolis and Washington, D.C. They’ll also attend an invitation-only President’s Dinner July 11 as well as a luncheon catered by Mission BBQ, a ServSafe review and test, and the Atlantic Cup Competition on July 12.

The Atlantic Cup competition is similar to the Foot Network show “Chopped,” where chefs compete and turn baskets of mystery ingredients into a three-course meal. Judges Susan Notter, member of the USA Culinary Olympic Team, Brian Boston, executive chef and co-owner of Maryland-based Milton Inn and the Highland Inn, and Doug Wetzel, executive chef of Gertrude’s Restaurant at the Baltimore Museum of Art, will decide which team claims the large trophy City of Glasgow College won in the last competition. “I told them bring it over because it’s not going back!” said Mary Ellen Mason, director of the Hotel, Culinary Arts and Tourism Institute at AACC.

The competition isn’t the only reality cooking show component to the visit, as Glasgow faculty member Gary MacLean, was also recently a winner of BBC’s ‎”MasterChef: the Professionals” show.

The visit is a product of an educational partnership established in 2014 between AACC and City of Glasgow College. “They approached us,” Mason said. “Through it we share best practices in teaching and learning, as well as student/faculty exchanges, like this visit.” In October 2016 a group of students from AACC visited Scotland for the first Atlantic Cup Competition. Carrie Svoboda said the partnership was beneficial to her as a student and will be to future students. “These are experiences that most chefs never have the opportunity to have,” she said.

The Hotel, Culinary Arts and Tourism Institute at Anne Arundel Community College was named one of the 50 Best Culinary Schools in the U.S. by Best Choice Schools. At number 14 on the 2016 list, HCAT met and exceeded high standards and performance metrics on the nationwide list.
